As a passionate healthcare intrapreneur, I regularly monitor and anticipate upcoming trends and companies in the healthcare domain. I am happy to share the list of 36 companies making a significant impact for humanity.

23andMe: 23andMe is a human genome research company enabling users to study their ancestry, genealogy, and inherited traits. [Found in 2006]

Guess why is there a 23! Moreover, there is an interesting history with Google!

AirStrip: AirStrip Technologies platform securely delivers critical patient information, including virtual real-time waveform data, directly from hospital monitoring systems to a doctor or nurse’s smart phone, laptop or desktop. [Founded in 2004]

AliveCor: AliveCor has a device and application that will turn any smartphone into a clinical-quality electrocardiogram (ECG) recorder. [Founded in 2011]

Aptible: Aptible is an application deployment and compliance platform designed to streamline HIPAA compliance for web and mobile technology. [Founded in 2013]

Atomwise: Atomwise develops artificial intelligence systems for drug discovery. Its technology learns like a pharmacist, using neural networks and supercomputers to analyze millions of potential medicines each day. [Founded in 2015]

Atomwise is one of my personal favourites! Just imagine with machine learning, protein folding, and supercomputing; one could speed up drug discovery, reduce the failure and the cost of drug development.

Bikanta: Bikanta is introducing revolutionary nanodiamond-based technology to push the boundaries of current medical imaging and diagnostics, allowing researchers to answer questions and medics to detect diseases that they currently cannot. [Founded in 2013]

Biobeats: BioBeats is a family of wellbeing and coaching products
that help you manage your health and productivity. [Founded in 2012]

CellScope: CellScope builds systems for disease diagnosis at home using smartphone cameras connected to a web platform. [Founded in 2010]

ClassPass: ClassPass is a monthly subscription service providing access to the world’s largest network of boutique fitness studios and gyms. ClassPass makes working out more engaging, accessible, and affordable, giving members unprecedented choice and flexibility by offering a diversity of options, including cycling, Pilates, yoga, boot camp, strength training, dance and more. [Founded in 2013]

Not sure why I have put this startup here. Different from the rest in terms of the technology, focus, and offering. I love the energy and the motivation of the founder Ms. Payal Kadakia.

Color Genomics: Color analyzes 30 genes — including BRCA1 and BRCA2 — to help women and men understand their risk for the most common hereditary cancers, including breast, ovarian, colon, and pancreatic cancer. [Founded in 2013]

CrowdMed: CrowdMed uses prediction market technology and the collective intelligence of human ‘medical detectives’ to produce diagnostic suggestions. [Founded in 2012]

Curofy: Curofy is a medical networking app that enables communication between doctors. With Curofy, doctors can easily find other doctors, call them with a single tap, and connect to collaborate on patient cases. [Founded in 2014]

Doctor On Demand: Doctor On Demand is a health care service that provides video visits with board-certified physicians and psychiatrists, doctorate-level psychologists, and lactation consultants via smartphones, tablets, and computers. [Founded in 2013]

Elemental Machines: Elemental Machines provides unprecedented visibility into complex chemistry and biology-based processes. Track contextual variables in the research lab or monitor critical equipment performance for easy access to performance data, as well as alerts if readings are out of range. [Founded in 2015]

Fitbit: Fitbit offers compact, wireless, wearable sensors that track a person’s daily activities in order to promote a healthy lifestyle. [Founded in 2007]

Ginger.io: Ginger.io uses big data from mobile phones to model user behavior and make inferences about health and wellness. [Founded in 2011]

Glooko: Glooko is the Unified Platform for Diabetes Management and provides an FDA-cleared, HIPAA-compliant Web and Mobile application for diabetes patients and clinicians which improves outcomes and lowers costs. [Founded in 2010]

HealthTap: Health Tap is reinventing the way people access information about their health by connecting patients and doctors online and disseminating trusted, vetted, peer-reviewed medical information. [Founded in 2010]

HeartFlow: HeartFlow is a cardiovascular diagnostics company developing solutions for the non-invasive diagnosis of coronary artery disease. [Founded in 2007]

HeartFlow is one of my personal favourites! I am interested in their image processing algorithms, partial differential equation (PDE) models, and fluid-structure interactions (FSI). Recently, met a research group in Belgium who are mathematically modeling human liver and kidney. Will discuss about our collaboration later!

Lumiata: Lumiata applies big data-driven medical science to patient data in order to optimize every health care interaction. [Founded in 2013]

Mango Health: Mango Health uses expertise in game design and mobile software development to improve health outcomes and reduce costs of care by addressing medication non-adherence. [Founded in 2012]

Misfit: Misfit Wearables is focused on developing great wearable products: things that people would want to wear all the time for a long time. [Founded in 2011]

Neurotrack: Neurotrack is transforming the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. Through a safe and non-invasive test, its technology can predict the risk of developing mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer’s disease years before symptoms occur. [Founded in 2012]

Omada: Omada is a digital health company that helps people reduce their risk for serious, chronic conditions like diabetes and heart disease by delivering world-class behavior change therapies via laptop, tablet, or smartphone. [Founded in 2011]

OSCAR: OSCAR is a health insurance company that is using technology to make insurance simple, intuitive and human. [Founded in 2013]

Patients Know Best: Patients Know Best (PKB) is the world’s first patient-controlled medical records system. It is a fully secure online tool which enables patients to better organize, manage and control their own health care provision. [Founded in 2008]

Patients Like Me: Patients Like Me (PLM) is a patient network and real-time research platform. Through the network, patients connect with others who have the same disease or condition and track and share their own experiences. [Founded in 2004]

Portea Medical: Portea Medical is India’s home healthcare pioneer and the largest and fastest growing provider of in-home medical care in India today with a 24-city network. Portea’s comprehensive services encompass geriatric care, post-operative care, palliative care and physiotherapy. [Founded in 2013]

Practice Fusion: Practice Fusion provides a free, web-based EMR system to physicians. With medical charting, scheduling, e-prescribing (eRx), lab integrations, referral letters, Meaningful Use certification, unlimited support and a Personal Health Record for patients, Practice Fusion’s EMR software addresses the complex needs of today’s healthcare providers and disrupts the health IT status quo. [Founded in 2005]

Recursion Pharmaceutical: Recursion Pharmaceutical combines experimental biology, bioinformatics, and artificial intelligence to discover new therapeutic opportunities for rare genetic diseases — or any disease that we can model in cells. [Founded in 2013]

Sleep.ai: Sleep.ai focuses on the diagnosis and monitoring of sleeping disorders using Mobile Health (mHealth) solutions. [Founded in 2016]

Smart Patients: Smart Patients is an online community where patients and caregivers affected by complex illness learn from each other about treatments, challenges, and how it all fits into the context of their experience. [Founded in 2013]

Strand Life Sciences: Strand Life Sciences provides bioinformatics solutions with advanced visualization, predictive systems modeling, data integration, and scientific context management components to transform raw data into actionable insights. [Founded in 2000]

Strand is one of my personal favourites! A spinoff from Indian Institute of Science (IISc). Great to see an Indian company doing an awesome research.

Vibrado: Vibrado is using wearable technology to help people (especially athletes) move more effectively, efficiently and safely. [Founded in 2012]

Zebra: Zebra is medical platform that uses image processing and machine learning algorithms to assist radiologists in detecting often overlooked indications. [Founded in 2014]

Zebra is one of my personal favourites! Image processing and machine learning to address key challenges in radiology.

Zocdoc: Zocdoc is an online marketplace where patients can find doctors and instantly book appointments. It delivers the accessible, seamless and simple experience patients expect and deserve. [Founded in 2007]

Most Indian companies like Practo and Lybrate have copied it.

The following companies have product/technology that are also used in the healthcare domain.

Ayasdi: Ayasdi is transforming how the world uses data to solve complex problems with an automated insight discovery platform that helps organizations operationalize insights from their data. [Founded in 2008]

Ayasdi is one of my personal favourites! The secret behind Ayasdi technology is topology. Topology is a mathematical discipline that studies shape. Topological Data Analysis (TDA) refers to the adaptation of this discipline to analyzing big and highly complex data. It draws on the insight that all data has an underlying shape and that shape has meaning.

Kaggle: Kaggle is the world’s largest community of data scientists and a platform for predictive modeling and analytics competitions and consulting. Users compete with each other to solve complex data science problems using the latest and varied applications of machine learning. [Founded in 2010]

Kaggle is one of my personal favourites! I find interesting challenges and healthcare data sets from this platform.

MetaMind: MetaMind wants to make deep learning accessible to everyone. It comprises a set of techniques that don’t require domain experts to program knowledge into algorithms. MetaMind improves and distributes state of the art solutions in natural language processing, computer vision and database predictions. [Founded in 2014]

It recently got acquired by Salesforce so not sure how it will now address healthcare!

Please note that Google, IBM, and Microsoft have no been included. It does not mean that they are not great! They are awesome. The only reason of not including them is that I have tried to include companies more focused on healthcare.

I was a little disappointed when Google announced that it will not be testing its Smart Contact Lenses.

IBM is already helping Atomwise with supercomputing infrastructure.
